Here are some helpful tips and information to keep your home comfortable and your utility bills in check. A well-maintained HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system is key to both.
The Importance of Changing Your HVAC Filters
The single most important maintenance task you can perform is regularly changing your HVAC filter. A clean filter allows your system to run efficiently, while a dirty, clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder. This not only increases your energy costs but can also lead to more serious issues and a shorter lifespan for the unit.
We recommend changing your filter at least once every 90 days. If you have pets or a lot of foot traffic, you may need to change it more frequently, perhaps every 30-60 days. It is your responsibility to change the filter on your unit(s). Service calls resulting from a dirty filter can lead to costly fees for you. If you have questions about changing the filter, we’re happy to help.
When purchasing a new filter, it’s essential to choose one with a lower MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating. We recommend a filter with a MERV rating of 8 to 10. While higher MERV ratings trap smaller particles, they also restrict airflow more, which can put a strain on your HVAC system. If you are concerned about air quality, such as with allergies or pets, we recommend using a standalone HEPA air purifier. This will help keep your indoor air cleaner without restricting the airflow your HVAC system needs to run efficiently, thereby protecting the unit.
Other Tips for HVAC Efficiency
- Keep Vents Clear: Make sure furniture, curtains, and other objects are not blocking any air vents. This allows for proper air circulation throughout your home.
- Don’t Close Vents in Unused Rooms: Closing vents to individual rooms might seem like a good way to save energy, but it can actually make your system work harder. HVAC systems are designed to heat and cool a specific square footage. Closing vents increases pressure and can cause damage to the unit over time.
- Be Mindful of Temperature Settings: A small change in your thermostat setting can lead to big differences in your energy bill. The smaller the difference between the inside and outside temperatures, the less energy your system needs to use. We recommend setting your thermostat to a comfortable but reasonable temperature, and consider pre-cooling your home during the cooler parts of the day, such as the night and morning, so the unit doesn’t have to work as hard during the hottest hours.
- Report Issues Promptly: If you notice any unusual noises, smells, or if the system isn’t cooling or heating effectively, please report it to us immediately. Addressing small issues early can prevent them from becoming costly problems.
By following these simple steps, you can help ensure your HVAC system runs smoothly, efficiently, and keeps your energy bills as low as possible.
